Back to Nature

The best part about my new outdoor horizons is that I can get back to nature...

(Editor's Note: ... was this really necessary?)

Oh my, this is really bad. Pr'aps I did go a trifle too far.

I believe I smell something other than dirt.

In my excitement, I may have forgotten to shake off. I think there is vegetation still growing in this pile.

Footloose and Fancy Free

Today Brita turned me loose in the BIG pasture. There was a big hole full of cat tails and frogs, that I had to avoid. I was very sensible, and stayed close to my people.

What I didn't get too close to was the fence... it looks like the last guy who did, got his britches caught. There are little pieces of fabric hanging everywhere, and fluttering in the breeze.

One time I got brave enough to go past the corner to the wide open space, but then I realised I was alone, and came running right back.

I got to explore in the woods. This scary creature turned out to be the end of a drain pipe, but it looked like a snake.

I ate some dirt, and chewed on a tree root.

Then I explored the run-in shed...

And played in the manure pile....

But mostly I enjoyed the grass. There were more different kinds than I've ever had to choose from.

The world is certainly wide, and full of wonders. I sampled quite a few of them today. I think I'm going to like the big pasture.

Horse Eating Monster

Yesterday we rode around the dairy barns to check on how the repairs are coming, and lurking in the driveway was a horse eating monster. I gave it a wide berth, because I've seen these chasing horses down the road before. The horse barely got away!

A Firey Horse...A Cloud of Dust...And a Hearty....

...Hey! Knock that Off!

Since I moved to New York 4 years ago, I've sort of been the Lone Ranger. I grew up on a big farm, running in the fields with lots of other horses my age. But since I've moved here, I haven't been turned out with any buddies.

Brita has been promising me that I could make some friends. So, I wasn't completely surprised when I went out to the paddock today and it was already occupied. Hairy was already out there. I've met Hairy before. He lives in the stall next to mine, and sometimes we say hello when we pass by each other.

We said "Hello", but I didn't make a big deal out of it.

It was nice having a friend out there.

Everything Hairy did...

I did too...

We became instant friends... I did kick at him once to show him I'm the boss, but Hairy is a pacifist, and he just trotted out of my way.

Then Hairy's older brother Face-Off came out to play.

He's a lot grumpier than Hairy, and he didn't want to be friends.

We sort of ignored each other, and for awhile, everyone got along.

Then I decided enough was enough. I am the most special horse around here, and obviously I should be the boss of everyone. We all ran around a little pretending to be tough. It was pretty exciting! It was alot like playing cowboys and Indians!

All that kicking made me mad. I thought about it for awhile, then I figured out how to trap Face-Off against the fence, and I let him have it! That made him really really mad, and he started using his teeth too, and really being mean. I wasn't going to back down, and pretty soon Mom and Brita came out and yelled at everybody, separated us, and made us all go back to our rooms.

It was a pretty big dust-up. Hairy is still my friend, but not Face-Off. I'm not so sure this towns big enough for the both of us.

Wandering Woman and "Date Night"

I'm having a bit of a problem keeping track of all my women. They are wandering away from home and out of sight, and I don't like it one bit. You see, we have a new grazing area, and I can't see it from the barn. We all have to take turns in it. I love to go out their and graze alone, but when someone else goes out, and leaves me behind at the barn, I feel very left out.
Last night I was flirting with Copy who was outside my window till late in the evening. This has been going on a while now. Every night I flirt if she is in the "mood" (she's moody)! But recently she got to go out into the round pen where there is new grass and big skies. I wanted to go out there too. Well, then I did get out there, and I could smell that she and Ace had definitely been there.

So, last night I "asked her out", thinking it would be fun to both eat grass together. Well, she took me seriously! She broke out and stood waiting for me to join her.

Oh gosh, Mom got there too soon. I hadn't figured a way to escape. It was a great plan in the making, but we hadn't gotten it perfected. I guess I'll just have to call and run and kick and steam about when she goes out, and hope someday I get to go out there with her. (Editor's note: Yeah right!)
